Biography

Betsy Rosenblatt Rosso, owner of Rosso Writing LLC, is a writer and editor who helps nonprofit organizations and small businesses tell the compelling stories of their important work so the people and communities they serve can thrive. Betsy provides the guidance and expertise clients need to improve the way they communicate with funders, clients, customers, volunteers, and other supporters.

Betsy has produced a variety of top-quality, engaging communications materials including websites, electronic and print newsletters, brochures, grant proposals, blogs, press releases, articles, information kits, and new media. She has worked with diverse clients and is skilled at interviewing and profiling clients, staff members, volunteers, and others who are the heart and soul of an organization and whose stories exemplify the organization's mission.

While Betsy possesses particular expertise in writing about children, youth, families, education, and health she is also well-versed in the areas of housing, human services, immigrants, governance, philanthropy, and the arts.

Before launching her consulting practice five years ago, Betsy served as communications officer for the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation where she wrote and edited Meyer's monthly e-newsletter and its award-winning annual reports. She also re-created Meyer's website, increasing traffic by 65% and earning awards for top foundation websites. Previously, she served as senior editor for BoardSource, where she edited the periodical Board Member and edited publications that help to strengthen nonprofit organizations by creating more effective boards of directors.

Betsy has volunteered with nonprofits since before she was old enough to hold a job. She's served as a candy striper; a literacy tutor for adults; a fundraising walker for diabetes and AIDS; a construction worker for Habitat for Humanity; an appointment and referral maker for the Arlington Free Clinic; a dinner server and toiletry distributor for the Arlington Street People's Assistance Network, among other activities. She served as a mentor for the Higher Achievement Program in Washington, DC, where she taught literature to sixth-graders attending DC Public Schools. Currently she volunteers as a writing coach for a Posse Foundation scholar.

When Betsy was eight years old she launched a neighborhood newspaper that she typed on her dad's typewriter and sold door-to-door for a dime. Betsy knew then she wanted to be a writer. Since then she has honed her editorial craft significantly but maintained her commitment to telling stories that engage and matter to the community.
